Rich's Water Valve Relay Controller With Rain Sensor

I needed a way to control the water for my lawn sprinklers with a timer that has flexible watering times and a rain sensor.

So I designed this circuit using a GE model 15089 digital timer, Orbit 27987 water valve and GRI 2600 water sensor.
Using the GE timer, I can program any time and duration I wish.
The other nice thing is that the water valve is separated from the electronics. If the valve ever leaks or becomes defective, It is just $15.00 to replace.
There is no battery to worry about.

This is a great way to control a lawn sprinkler system when you are on water restrictions that require you to water on certain days and specific times of the day.

Here is the whole project including circuit schematic and parts list.

  1. This is awesome! I'm working on a DIY sprinkler project using a raspberry PI which will allow me to control my lawn sprinkler using online weather data so that I can avoid watering if rain is forecasted in the next few hours. Also allows me to control from my smartphone. I was looking primarily at AC solenoids as I was concerned with continuosly watering the lawn if I "lost" power. It looks like your circuit takes care of that by generating the -24V with the use of the caps.
